From independent hip hop record labels to the major labels it's important to have an understanding of how recording companies operate if you are going to break into the industry.

Major labels are the ones with far more power to get you heard but they're also the ones that are harder to get to.

A lot of these organizations have been around for years and have their hands in every aspect of the music industry you could possibly imagine. Understanding where they started and how they've evolved to where they're at is important to understanding the current state of affairs within the music industry.

If your looking to start your own label or your simply looking to get signed reading up and learning about hip hop record labels is a good idea.

It is always wise to look to successful models within your field to see what they have done right. More importantly it's to see what they have done wrong. Learn from their failures so that you don't make the same mistakes they did.

It is my opinion that you should use them not to copy their procedures but as sort of a guideline.

The benefit to being fresh to the game around such big names is that I have a more contemporary view on the music industry. My train of thought is emmersed in a new paradigm rather than being stuck in an old system of doing things.

I'm looking to these brands to help me figure out how to build mine for success in the new economic environment.

What I'm trying to say is when you have big organizations that have been around for a while they tend to get stuck in an old way of doing things.

Due to the internet and torrent downloads the industry has changed much and is continuing to change. It's gonna take innovative creative entrepreneurs to redefine the music industry for the next generation.

So read up. Educate yourself. Try different things and think outside the box. Let's change the industry for the better.
